The Committee to Elect David Roth

I have two amazing sons. Many of you probably do not know that my boys are adopted from foster care. They are alive today because of the support they received through Medicaid. In business you quickly learn that you have to think things through before you make decisions or even statements. You learn that your actions and words have consequences. I guess that you don't learn that when, like my opponent, you spend your career building big government. The other day my opponent called for the elimination of Medicare and Medicaid. In fact even most private insurance was on his chopping block in favor of a prepaid cash system. He made claims that a 22 year old, fresh out of college, making $80,000 a year was the norm in Idaho Falls. Sometimes, he felt, that people might just have to put off medical procedures and expenses for a while until they saved up their money. I guess that my opponent does not realize that Idaho Falls overwhelmingly approved Medicaid Expansion in an effort to bring medical coverage to the most vulnerable of our citizens. My opponent claims to be an expert in data and analysis. I am still looking for the data to support the $80,000 college graduate in Idaho Falls . Some data that I can give you. Healthcare, especially surgery, is very expensive. I have two very dear friends who nearly lost their lives to leukemia. They were saved, however, due to a bone marrow transplant. That is two people here in Idaho Falls. I looked it up, the average cost of a bone marrow transplant tops $500,000. Now, he does suggest in those instances you could take up a collection or have a fundraiser. Really? To be fair after being blasted by several posts he did back track his plan and admit that he would not have been able to afford his own children’s medical expenses without Medicaid even if he had saved the money he claimed that he would. So it would seem he wants insurance, he just does not think you deserve it. In the end he finished the conversation by saying it was just an idea and not something he would pursue. That is my point though. Haven’t we had enough of leadership who make ridiculous claims on social media, cause all sorts of havoc, and then in the end walk it back and say never mind? Sound familiar? That won’t help anyone, including the residents of Idaho Falls. For what it is worth Medicare exists completely outside the realm of the state legislature so I will not be offering a plan to fix that at this time. I will say that I fully support Medicaid expansion. I have seen first-hand the benefits for low income families. Remember, Idaho Falls needs an experienced representative who understands how to gather and analyze data, understands the effect that statements can have, and will be accountable to Idaho Falls residents for the things said and done as our representative.

TacticThe ad weaponizes a deeply personal family narrative — adopted sons alive because of Medicaid — to make the opponent's stated desire to eliminate Medicaid feel viscerally cruel and irresponsible.
