A man threatened me at my town hall in Maine. I want to tell you exactly what happened:
I’ve held over 30 town halls across Maine over the past year.
This man didn’t come to ask a question. He came to intimidate.
He repeated lies about undocumented immigrants voting in our elections. I told him the truth: there is no evidence. None.
It’s a lie designed to turn Mainers against our own neighbors. I told him that targeting Maine’s Somali community is simply racist.
The room applauded.
That’s when he snapped at me.
He called me a “faggocrat.” He told every person in that room to go to hell. Then he looked at me and said: “I’m not finished with you, jackass.” And he stormed out.
I’m gay. I’m not hiding that from anyone. I’ve been called worse. I finished the town hall.
When it was over, two people on our team went outside to make sure he wasn’t lingering in the parking lot. He was. And the first thing he told them was that he had guns in his car.
Our team didn’t run. They did something courageous. They stayed, and they listened. For 15 minutes, in that parking lot, they let this man talk. About Social Security. About his family’s history with the KKK.
And after all of it, he apologized. To our team, and somewhat to me. Then he got in his car and drove home.
On January 6th, I was barricaded in my office on Capitol Hill while a mob attacked the building. I was serving as Chief of Staff to Congresswoman Katie Porter. After that day, I founded an organization dedicated to combating political violence in America. This is my life’s work.
I won’t be intimidated. I will keep showing up in every corner of Maine’s 2nd district. I will keep taking every question from every person who walks through the door. I’m not scared and I’m not backing down.
