I was honored to speak at the Kentucky Derby Polo match in honor of the Mission 22 project this weekend, and throw out the commemorative “first ball”! Every day, at least 22 veterans take their own life. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) takes a devastating number of veterans away from us. There are memorials dedicated to the fallen warriors of nearly every major conflict in our country’s history, yet, there is no monument for those who have fallen in the war against veteran suicide. Thankfully, that is about to change as Mission 22’s mobile monument displaying steel cut outs in the likeness of those we have lost to suicide, will find a permanent home in Broken Arrow this coming October. These beautiful monuments that commemorate the lives of the veterans who found themselves in a battle here at home, will be cherished and respected by our community for generations. When you encounter veterans, it is good to thank them for their service, but don’t forget to tell them “welcome home” too.
