How long can a small business survive without income? Three weeks? Four weeks? Many of us are learning the hard way. Kansans are no strangers to hardships. Kansas was forged in plagues, droughts and blood. We adapt. But now, most Kansas small businesses have gone three weeks or more with little or no income. Every day, Washington promises relief – that NEVER comes. I speak from personal experience. It’s been more than three weeks since I was one of the first applicants for emergency SBA (Small Business Administration) relief (EIDL) that promised to help keep small businesses afloat during the crisis. The paperwork I completed said the loans would be processed within THREE DAYS. THREE WEEKS later, I finally received a response. It was an email telling me that the rules had changed. By then, the SBA was OUT OF MONEY. The PPP (Paycheck protection program) was billed as a way that small businesses could keep employees on their payrolls. Small proprietors could begin applying April 12. But before the little guys’ applications could even be processed – and before I could even apply - the program had been TAPPED OUT by large corporations. This is the story of rural Kansas and the SBA and federal programs for decades. The largest companies and coastal communities get the cash, and we get the bill. Like you, I’m tired of standing by while the big guys get bigger, taking more and more resources, while we, the people who grow their food and help provide them with clean air and water, are left to fend for ourselves. It's why we need one of US in Washington. We need someone who has lived in rural Kansas for decades and understands communities and small businesses. I am running for Congress to give us a seat at the table as the nation works through these crises and rebuilds for the future.

Kansas hospitals are in crisis. In the last 10 years, we've lost 6, with nearly 1/3 more in danger of closing. If we hope to rebuild our economy it is imperative that we strengthen our hospitals. Rural hospitals especially need help. The doubly whammy of the Kansas GOP successfully blocking Medicaid expansion and the effects of COVID-19, rural Kansas hospitals face an uncertain future. In my area, our non-profit critical access hospital in nearby Council Grove provides not only emergency care, but also primary care through area rural health clinics, including one where I live in Cottonwood Falls (pop. 900). At present, our rural hospitals aren’t drowning in Covid 19 cases. Rather, they are financially burdened by the lack of elective procedures. We need a representative in Congress who understands that rural hospitals need relief and cannot afford cuts to Medicare and Medicaid reimbursements. If elected, bolstering rural economies would be my top priority and ensuring a safe and healthy workforce is essential to achieve that goal.
