The statewide universal voucher program is a plan that will not add support for the 90% of students attending our TN public schools. It will erase support. According to the article, if we look to Arkansas, which is a model being touted by Governor Lee, 95% of the recipients of these vouchers Never attended a public school. Knowing this, who are the Governor and the Supermajority Republican legislators really attempting to serve? Contrary to popular belief, it appears, by virtue of their policies, that the Republicans do not want to destroy public education...While many of us as Tennesseans see our public schools as an environment that allows our students to realize their true potential and obtain a level of success they are willing to work for....For Republicans, COVID made them believe that it only serves a narrow yet vital historic purpose. In many ways, they see it as a national daycare system, and if it were destroyed, it would severely harm our economy. So, the goal is NOT to destroy but to manage its success while creating policy that maintains and bolsters Republican political talking points. In short, the public school system becomes a chess board of pawns for Republican perpetual power and control.
