Rebecca Whiting
So, there has been some misinformation intentionally shared about me, and I need to clear this up. The problem with misinformation is that lies spread faster than truth. I have made it a point through this campaign to NOT act in a way that is unbecoming of somebody who should act as an example for the kids in school. I have intentionally made it a point not to trash anybody and to make an effort to be the kind of person that I want to work with if I am able to get on the school board. Unfortunately, some things have come to light and I need to address that, because the accusations are potentially serious. At the Beltrami Republican office there was a handout with a description on each of the candidates and an asterisk next to a few handpicked names as endorsed candidates. At my name it made it sound like I was a daily drug user. Maybe in any other situation it would be laughable, because it is so absurd, but I am running a campaign for school board. I am a small business owner in Bemidji. I am raising my kids here in this area. The implications of what that could mean if somebody were to take that a step further could be substantial. Especially considering how false it is. Not only am I obviously not on drugs, but I have never smoked a joint in my life. I was an athlete in highschool and college. I went straight from there to the Army, and straight from the Army to motherhood. Nowadays I help run a farm, business, family. I have never had any desire to do even a non-addictive recreational drug. What was true on that paper is that I am actively involved with the Libertarian party and part of our platform is decriminalization of non-addictive drugs like cannabis and psilocybin. And because of the studies of their health benefits, I support that. I am an Iraq war veteran that came home with a traumatic brain injury from an IED that killed almost everyone else around me. When CBD became legal in the US, I tried it to deal with the long term effects of my injuries and it worked. It has helped me stay off the hard core prescription pain drugs completely. It is fully legal and you can buy it many places in town now. It also does not give me a high as the THC in CBD is negligible. I had no intention of talking about Iraq or my time there since sometimes it is very hard for me to talk about. I had no intention of talking about dealing with a TBI from the IED that very well could have killed me. But I especially had no intention of talking about it because it has nothing to do with running for school board. Supporting decriminalization for substances that could benefit people medicinally also has absolutely nothing to do with running for school board. It was the only potentially negative thing said about me, because they have nothing else to say. My only real crime here is that I am not a Republican. But this amounts to slander. At first, I was just in shock that those things were being not just said but printed and distributed about me, but that quickly turned into anger. I know who wrote them. I know who did this, and I hope that they will be the kind of people they claim to be, one of integrity, and offer a very public apology. One that will reach just as far as the literature they distributed did. Nobody in their right mind that knows me believes this. However, from this I have been invited to go to the next Beltrami Republican meeting and speak, because I walked into the office and confronted those that were there about what was being distributed. I will be there Monday evening, the meeting starts at 6:30 PM. If you were wanting an opportunity to meet me, now is your chance. I will be speaking more about this, but I will also be addressing school board stuff. I am sorry that I had to write this. I am sorry you had to read it, but unsubstantiated allegations that are that serious cannot be left unaddressed. I will not name who wrote it. They know who they are, and more importantly I know who they are. I am also recommitting myself to run a clean campaign. To be the kind of potential school board member that I would also want to work with. To treat people fairly. To wait for facts, to go to the source when I have a question. And to not spread lies and gossip. If I want to be treated fairly, I also need to treat people fairly. And in this case, I am also willing to use grace and forgiveness and move past this. This will be the only and last time you see me mention it on this page. I don't hold grudges. The meeting at the Beltrami Republicans starts at 6:30 this Monday. It was recommended to me to show up a little early. Look for me on the ballot November 8th! #whitingforbemidji
