I spent time this week with three sheriffs from three different North Mississippi counties, and I left truly moved by their commitment to the people they serve.
These are men who know every back road, every family name, every school hallway because they live here, raise their kids here, and carry the weight of protecting their neighbors every single day.
We talked about the challenges they face:
• The heartbreaking rise of fentanyl and drug trafficking
• Limited resources for rural departments
• Supporting officers through stressful, emotional work
• And yes — we even got to meet their therapy dogs, who bring comfort to officers and accountability to the inmates who care for them.
What stood out most wasn’t the hardship. It was the heart.
Public service isn’t a talking point for them. It’s their calling.
Mississippi is blessed to have leaders like these sheriffs who wake up every morning determined to make their counties safer and stronger. I’m grateful for their dedication, and as a former paramedic, I will always listen to the people who are doing the work on the ground.
