Today I received one of my most meaningful contributions to my campaign to date. No, it was not from some large PAC or group, it was not from any special interest group at all, but it was from someone who has special interest in me. Can you believe that my kindergarten teacher sent me a contribution? I guess it is really not all that far-fetched as I see her in church many Sundays and, to be honest considering that I am now the administrator of the elementary school I attended I guess it is not that hard to believe. She should know what kind of person I am because it has been said that everything I ever really needed to learn I learned in kindergarten. By the way she is not the only one of my teachers that support my campaign.
Idaho Falls is such a great community and I am so lucky to be able to raise my family in the city that raised me. I don't know if you know this but I live about 4 blocks from the house I grew up in. My mother and grandmother still live there. I can actually beat that too because the house I live in now was originally built for my Aunt and I spent a ton of my time in this house growing up. I am so thankful that my kids can ride their bikes around the neighborhood and play at Sugar Mill Park (It was substation park when I was growing up but this name is an improvement) or play on the playground at Falls Valley. Neighborhoods change, but there are still so many of the families living in the same houses that I know from childhood. And, some of them have sent me contributions as well.
When your family has been part of a community for 40 years you have a connection. People know you, and maybe you don't know me personally but you probably know someone who does. When you really want to get to know the character of someone, I think sometimes you have to judge them by the company they keep. My mom, Lindy, worked at the Credit Union for 37 years. Maybe one time you went to use the ATM in the evening and it was out of service. You might have heard a voice behind the wall saying, "It will be back up in a minute, I am just fixing a jam." Yeah that was my mom- I might have been back there too because when I was young I often had to tag along. Her entire career, even after she became a Vice President, people would still call and ask for her because she could solve problems. I learned my work ethic from her. Or maybe you or perhaps your children had your braces adjusted by my sister, Sarah, who worked in the same orthodontics office on John Adams from the time she was in high school to the day that she tragically passed unexpectedly on the day of the party for my grandmother's 100th birthday. If she were still here she would be out knocking on doors for me because there is nothing my sister would not have done to help me or anyone else who needed it. That is the way that all of us are. Or maybe you know my grandmother, now she is the true force to be reckoned with. She is now 103 and she is still actively working to do whatever she can to help others.
You could talk to my teachers, I talk to many of them regularly. I started my first company when I was in High School, a computer company called MicroWest Technologies, LLC. We had an office and storefront over on the Yellowstone Highway. My 9th grade earth science teacher was my first investor. I actually think that I made the newspaper with that one. I will find the article and post a picture.
I guess that my point is that I don't have to constantly remind you that I am not beholden to the out of town groups that give me money. We are a campaign powered by and financed by the people of Idaho Falls. I have had to work to earn your vote, I have done my homework, I am an experienced leader that can apply my business skills to governing efficiently instead of learning on the job and wasting your money, my roots in Idaho Falls run deep, and my character was forged here. I hope you will consider allowing me to advocate for Idaho Falls in Boise.
