Rebecca Whiting
The leaves are starting to change colors finally. This year we are several weeks behind with the fall color. I heard somebody say that the last year the leaves were this late changing was 2013. The winter of 2014 brought record breaking sub zero temperatures (over 100 days straight) and no significant warmth that summer, so I hope there is no correlation. We still had 3 1/2 feet of snow the end of April, beginning of May. There is a school board candidate forum this Saturday from noon to 2 that I will be attending. I will share the flyer in a later post. I do have other obligations Saturday morning, so I will be going from one event to the next. One of the questions asked in advance was where we as candidates stand on union issues. I believe that it is the natural right of the teachers to organize themselves to stand up for their rights and advocate for their pay and benefits. I have met with the teachers union representative and I like her a lot. My initial take is that she is honest, hard working, and sincere. What I would like to see in the future is a teachers union representative having an active presence during school board meetings (and any group that plays a vital role in the schools). I don't believe truly sound decisions can be made without their expertise and knowledge. I don't know why that's not being done now, but I would try to change that. My husband drove a school bus for several years for the Bemidji School District which is also a unionized group. I believe this is another area that needs attention and I'll go into that more later. Fun fact- I learned at the last school board meeting that the Bemidji school buses travel over 1 million miles PER SCHOOL YEAR. That's incredible. Now compare that to the price of diesel right now and you can very quickly see why the districts budget is so strained. The requirements for the buses are a state mandate. The schools are required to provide transportation no matter what the case is. The state also does not necessarily provide the funding needed to make it happen. Anyways, happy fall! This time of year is my favorite, but because we have a farm it is also one of the busiest. Look for me on the ballot, November 8th. #whitingforbemidji
