I love this time of year. The leaves are red and yellow, the air is a little cooler. We are spending our free time stacking firewood and getting ready for winter. Stacking firewood is one of my favorite chores, I really don't mind doing it at all. Last Saturday, the Bemidji Educators Association hosted a forum where the candidates for school board were able to answer a few pre-planned questions. I am not a public speaker, but that is something I am working on. The first question asked was why did we decide to run for the Bemidji School Board. So, I am going to answer that here in this post. I am a mom to many children. We have a large family that I am deeply committed to as any mom naturally would be to her children. I have been watching the state of the country and our community the past years and have not always liked what I see. I have grave concerns about our future, because I want my children to grow up and be able to interact in a world that is full of opportunity and also where they can live in peace. I am an Army veteran that spent two tours in Iraq as a combat medic during two very key points of the war. I was in the Al Anbar province in 2004-2005 during the Battle for Fallujah and also in Baghdad during the Surge in 2006-07. I saw the worst that humanity had to offer and came out of those experiences resolute that I was going to live a life of peace and be a force for good and honesty. I would not stand for corruption, lies, and complacency. I knew that if I wanted to make the world I was raising my children in to be the kind of world I wanted, that I was going to ultimately have to be the kind of person that voluntarily took up the cause and helped create it myself. Going through something like Iraq puts you in a position where your perception of the world is tested to its limits, and I came out of that having a real good understanding of what kind of legacy I wanted to leave behind and what kind I did not. I put so many things aside as trivial and focused instead very intensely on ideals that would help support the long term vision I had regarding my family's future. One of the things that I focused on was going to college to be a teacher. I took classes where I could while I was still in the Army, then used my GI Bill to finish a BA in English and start graduate school for education. I started the certification process to be a teacher, but before I finished decided to put it aside. My passion for learning and education did not diminish though. My kids will tell you that I get more excited about school supply shopping than I do about Christmas every year (and I listen to Christmas music all year long, yes I am one of those). I love reading to them in the evenings. Some of my favorite books are Charles Dickens, Kenneth Grahame, and Jules Verne. I love old things, and books are no different. I hope to pass on my love of classic literature to my children. I've been this way since I was a kid. I read Three Musketeers while in the fifth grade in my free time. When you have this kind of enthusiasm for something, you just want to pass it on. As an English major, I love being able to discuss Shakespeare and almost anything I can get my hands on to read. I am currently teaching a class to teenagers on Plato and Greek philosophy, because I love it and these old books are not studied enough anymore in my humble opinion. I decided to run because the school board needs to have people on it that believe in honesty. Accountability. Transparency. We need people that will stand against corruption should they find themselves in that position. We need people that will not support indoctrination if/when the time comes when that needs to be addressed. We need people that are willing to take the necessary steps to keep a school just a school. To be realistic and innovative. To be sincere and devoted. Firm and steadfast. People that can take a big complicated thing like a school district, make sense of it, then correctly identify the areas that need attention knowing how to fix them. My experiences in life have put me on this path where I know I can get through hard situations because I have. I know I can manage a lot at once because I have. I know I can take multitasking to an extreme because I do. And I am willing to do this because it is just that important. The future of the schools is directly related to the future of the kids. The kids (mine and yours) are what will continue carrying on our legacy long after we are gone, and I want to make sure it is one worth fighting for. I got involved and decided to run to make sure that happens. I do not crave recognition. I value my privacy. But I also have this vision for the community I want to leave behind for my kids where people are able to provide for their families, create something great, and live in peace together. I don't think those goals are unrealistic nor are they too lofty. I want to be unifying. I want to bring people together that may think differently (which is fine) but can recognize the importance of our shared common goals and acknowledging the importance of a solid education. I tried to say all that in two minutes at the forum and came up way short because two minutes is not enough time to really be able to understand somebody's motives. Hopefully here I have been able to articulate this better. I am getting involved ultimately because I love my family and my community. I want to see everyone succeed.
